All About Organizational Behaviour

Organizational behavior (OB) is the study and application of the human side of management. It is concerned with the study of human behavior at work. It represents the behavior approach to management, the whole of and action in a work setting. OB has defined differently behavior scientist. A few important definition of OB  are given below :

Luthans :

"organization behavior is directly concerned with the understanding, prediction, and control of human behavior in an organization."
Robbins :
"OB is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, group, and structure have on behavior within an organization for the purpose of applying   knowledge  towards improving an organization's effectiveness ."

McShane and Glinow :

"Organizational behavior is the study  of what people think, feel, and do  in  and around organization

Moorhead and Griffin :

"Organization behavior is the study of human behavior in an organization setting, the interface between human behavior and the organization,  the organization itself ."

Importance Of OB

The field of OB provides an understanding of why the people behave as they do in an organization. OB seeks to focus on the whole complex of the human factor in an organization by identifying cause and effect of that behavior. The study of OB benefits us in several ways. Some of them are :

1. Understanding organization and Employee in a better way :

The study of OB helps us understand organization and people in a better way. Friendly and cordial (kind) relation between employees and organization (managers) create a proper work environment in organization. In this regard OB serves three purposes:

- What cause behaviour?

- Why particular antecedents (background) cause behaviour?

-Which antecedents of behavior can be controlled directly and which are beyond control?

2. Motivate Employee:

OB helps manages to motivate employees. Motivation brings good organization performance. OB helps manages to apply appropriate motivational tools and technique in accordance with the nature of individuals employees. OB considers an individual difference in a proper way.

3. Improvement industrial / Labour Relation :

OB is the human tool for human benefit. It takes human problem humanely. It helps to understand the root cause of the problem, predict it's future cause of action and control its negative consequences. Thus, behaving with employees as human being enables the managers to maintain cordial employee relations. The, in turn,  create peace and harmony in organizations.

4. Prediction and control of human behavior:

One of the most important reasons for studying OB is to learn how to predict and control or manage human behavior in organizations. If done properly it helps to bring organizational effectiveness. Therefore, knowledge of OB become a pre -requisite for a person like you (student of BBS / MBA / MBS / BBA / BIM / BHM / BCS / BHMS/ BBM) who is going to assume a managerial job and succeed as a good manager.

5. Effectiveness utilization of human resource :

OB helps manager how to manage people effectively in the organization.  It enables the manager to inspire and motivate employees towards higher productivity and better results. It guarantees the suceess of the organization to achieve its goals.

OB System

A system is a group of integrated parts acting together to accomplish a goal. An organization today is described as the system. It is viewed as a group of integrated parts within a unified purpose. All system is composed of five basic element input, process, and output (plus internal and external environment). Organization achieves their goals by creating, operating and communicating an OB system. We present here the OB system (model) developed by S.P Robbins. It also interacts with external environmental forces.

a. Inputs:

They are also called independent variables. They are the determinants of productivity, absenteeism, turnover, citizenship and job satisfaction. There are three categories of input variables to the OB system. They are individual level series, group level series and organizational level series.

b. Processing:

The input received by the individual, group, and organization as a whole are processed together to bring the output.

Output:

They are also called the dependent variables. They are the key factor that OB wants to explain and predict. Here, we list each these dependent variables.

-Productivity

-Absenteeism

-Turnover

-Organizational citizenship behavior

-Job satisfaction

Conclusion:

Based on the above discussion it can be safely concluded that if OB system is designed and implemented properly by the manager in an organization it brings a higher level of employee productivity, lower level of employee absenteeism and turnover; employees feel proud to be a part of the organization ; and a high degree of job satisfaction and vice versa. Again, the system of OB is influenced by an external environment where it operates.
